Process for this year
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have modified our procedures to protect you and our volunteers.
All tax service will be by appointment only. All your tax information must be presented on paper. Unfortunately, we cannot take tax information from your phone.
Confirm that we can do your return
First, read the list of items here on What We Can and Cannot Do to be sure we can prepare your return.
In addition to the items on the What We Can and Cannot Do page, this year, at our Reston site, we will not do:
Amended prior year returns
DC , MD and Part-year VA returns
Injured spouse allocation
Obtain the forms
Second, obtain the forms which you need to complete before requesting an appointment. This packet contains everything you need to provide to us. And there is a checklist to make sure you are ready.
Forms will be available at the Front Desk of the Community Center beginning on February 1. Or you may download the forms here:
What to Bring
Complete the forms
Third, gather your tax documents and fill out the forms as completely as you can. If you have problems filling out these forms, get help from a family member or friend.

At your appointment
Before your appointment, please review the COVID-Screening questions. If you answer YES to any of the questions, please call us to reschedule your appointment.
On the day of your tax appointment, you must wear a mask. We will be able to talk to you at the site from the other side of a Plexiglas panel, but your conversation with one of our volunteers will be short (no more than 10-15 minutes).
You must bring your Identification, Social Security cards, and copies of all tax documents to leave with us while we create your tax return.
If you would like a tax refund deposited in a bank account, please provide us a canceled check or your bank routing and account number. We will return all of your copies to you along with your completed tax return.
We will ask you to sign the IRS Form 14446 – Virtual Taxpayer Consent. This form explains our process and allows you to authorize us to hold your tax documents in order to prepare your return when you are not sitting next to us. Without this signed form, we cannot do your return.
You will not be able to sit with us while we prepare your return. A tax counselor will prepare your return, and a second counselor will review it, as usual.
You will need to be accessible by phone during the day in case we have questions about your return. If a tax preparer needs to reach you, you will be called from the Reston Community Center.
Once we have completed the return, we will call you to come back and pick up your return and the documents which you left with us. You will need to sign the Form 8879 which authorizes us to e-file your return. This will usually happen on the same day on which you dropped off the documents.
